JME History

The original John Muir Elementary school was completed in the fall of 1971, opening as a K-6 school with a population of 312 students. Growth since that time has leveled off and is consistent at around 390 students. Over the course of its 45-year history John Muir Elementary has received national recognition several times; once in 1990 and again in 2010, as one of the outstanding schools in the United States. In 2013, 2014 and 2015 we were named a Washington Achievement Award winner, by demonstrating reading & math growth over a three year period.

2017-18 will be our 6th year in our new building named for the famous naturalist John Muir, who was very active in the National Park movement. We have 4 shared learning spaces named in honor of him; Mt. Rainier, Yosemite, Sierras and Redwoods.
